NOFEs Honorary membership
The NOFE board may award honorary membership to epidemiologists who have had a significant influence on the development of epidemiological research in Norway over several years. At least two NOFE members must jointly propose a candidate for the candidate to be considered. In addition, a written justification for the nomination must be submitted. The submitted justification will be used by the NOFE board to assess the nominated candidate. If the nominated candidate is considered worthy by the board, the submitted justification will be used in the presentation of the honorary member at the conference. The NOFE’s honorary member will be invited ahead of the NOFE conference to give a short presentation about his own research career within the field of epidemiology. Honorary membership is not necessarily awarded every year, only if the board receives proposals for candidates who are found worthy of the honorary membership. The list of proposed candidates is confidential and is only available to the board. Candidate proposals shoul be send to post@nofe.no by 1st September.

Camilla Stoltenberg and Inger Torhild Gram are awarded NOFEs Honorary membership in 2025

Professor and CEO Camillla Stoltenberg, M.D., Ph.D. has focused on mental health, autism spectrum and developmental disorders, and the social determinants of health. She has led or participated in numerous large projects funded by national and international agencies, publishing over 145 scientific papers in leading journals.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was one of the countryโs most trusted public voices, communicating complex scientific knowledge with clarity and credibility and demonstrating how epidemiology can guide policy in times of crisis. she also engaged deeply in public discourse on health inequalities and education, influencing national and international policy and mentoring the next generation of researchers.
Professor Stoltenberg has worked tirelessly to improve access to register data for research and has been a clear, authoritative voice on the use of national health data in scientific studies. She was one of the main contributors to making the Norwegian Patient Registry personally identifiable and available for linkage to other data sources.
Throughout her career, she has played a pivotal role in developing Norway’s epidemiological infrastructure. In leadership positions at the Norwegian Public Health Institute, including Director from 2012 to 2023, she modernized health registries, biobanks, and large-scale health studies. She has an honorary doctorate at the University of Copenhagen and an honorary professorship at the University of Bristol.
Through a career that combines visionary leadership, strong scientific grounding, and societal engagement, she has bridged research, policy, and practice, making a profound and lasting impact on epidemiology and public health. In 2023, she assumed the position of CEO of the research institution NORCE, where she continues her work on socially relevant research.
Professor Inger Torhild Gram, M.D., Ph.D., has made major contributions to epidemiology, particularly in understanding how smoking influences cancer risk, premature mortality, and the benefits of quitting smoking. Her research has clarified mechanisms linking smoking to cancer, especially breast cancer, and has informed both scientific understanding and public health policies.
She has played a leading role in large population-based studies, including the Tromsรธ Study, the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC), the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), and the Multi-Ethnic Cohort (MEC) study in the United States. These projects have generated strong evidence on smoking and cancer prevention, influencing public health strategies in Norway and internationally.
Since 1999, Professor Gram has been Professor of Preventive Medicine at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, mentoring future epidemiologists and advancing research in preventive health. She also holds a part-time professorship at the University Hospital of North Norway, contributing to e-health research. Her leadership extends to national and international advisory roles, including the National Advisory Board on Tobacco Control, the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program, and the Scientific Council of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Professor Gram has authored over 200 scientific papers, with an h-index of 64 and more than 12,000 citations. Her work has been supported by major grants, including a โฌ6 million Horizon 2020 project. Recognized with the Sasakawa Foundation Scandinavian Scholarship and the World Scientists Forum Award in Cancer Epidemiology, she exemplifies scientific excellence and lasting public health impact.
